Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need drone licence in Ireland?

The minimum age for drone pilots is 16 years of age. A parent or guardian can register themselves as a drone pilot for anyone under the age of 16. The parent or guardian must ensure the under-16 drone pilot is fully trained and is kept under supervision.

Training can be completed to obtain a drone pilot licence:

  1. Through the Irish Aviation Authority, to fly drones in Open Subcategories A1 & A3
  2. Through Avtrain to fly drones in the Open Subcategory A2. You can complete this course.
  3. Through Avtrain to fly drones in the Specific Category under Standard Scenarios, PDRAs and SORAs. You can complete this course.

You can obtain a drone pilot licence in Ireland within a week, as all theoretical training is conducted online. Only Specific Category training could take longer as you are expected to participate in the Live Webinar every few weeks.
