UAS Operator & Remote Pilot Supplementary Training Courses

Avtrain provides all the following Supplementary Training Courses for UAS Operators and Remote Pilots.

Depending on the type and risk of the intended UAS operation, the UAS operator, as part of the application for an operational authorisation, should complete additional theoretical knowledge training specific to the intended UAS operation.

EASA UAS operation-specific endorsement courses

For the EASA Specific Category, the following are UAS operation-specific endorsement courses:

  • Night operations. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • General;
    • Degradation of visual acuity;
    • Night illusions;
    • Altered visual-scanning techniques;
    • Altered identification of obstacles.
  • Overflight (flight over known populated areas or over assemblies of people). During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Identification of populated areas and assemblies of people;
    • Optimising flight paths to reduce risk of exposure;
    • Likely operating sites and alternative sites;
    • Adequate clearance for wind effects, especially in urban environments;
    • Obstructions (wires, masts, buildings, etc.);
    • Avoiding third-party interference with the UA;
    • Minimum separation distances from persons, vessels, vehicles, and structures;
    • Impact of electromagnetic interference, i.e. high‑intensity radio transmissions;
    • Crowd control strategies and public access;
  • BVLOS operations. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Operation planning: airspace, terrain, obstacles, expected air traffic, and restricted areas;
    • Sensor systems and their limitations;
    • Cooperative and non‑cooperative aircraft (airspace surveillance);
    • Roles and responsibilities of the remote pilot to remain clear of collision;
    • Command, control and communication (C3) link performance and limitations;
    • Signal or communications latency for the C2 link;
    • Planning for the loss of the C2 link or for system failure;
    • Interpreting separate data sources;
    • Crew resource management (CRM).
  • low-altitude (below 500ft) operations. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Air traffic management (ATM) procedures;
    • Radio communications and phraseology;
    • Situational awareness;
    • Advanced aviation terminology.
  • flights in non-segregated airspace. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Clear roles and responsibilities;
    • Wake turbulence.
  • transport and/or dropping of cargo. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Weight and balance;
    • Load securing and awareness of dangerous goods;
  • transport of dangerous goods. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • General;
    • Safe transport of dangerous goods;
    • Collecting safety data and records.
  • operations with multiple UASs and swarms. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Limitations related to human factors;
    • CRM;
    • Navigating multiple platforms;
    • Recognising system failures;
    • Emergency containment procedures;
  • UA launch and recovery using special equipment. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Operating procedures;
    • Recognising failures;
  • Flying over mountainous terrain. During this course, we will cover these topics:
    • Temperature inversions;
    • Orographic lifting;
    • Higher winds through passes;
    • Mountain waves;
    • High- and low-pressure patterns;
    • Density altitude effects.

UAS Operational Authorisation Specific Courses

For the EASA Specific Category Operational Authorisation or LUC holders may decide to enrol their management personnel and drone remote pilots on the following courses:

  • Safety Management Systems
  • Compliance Monitoring
  • Radio Licence
  • Emergency Response Planning: ERM and ERT.
  • Human Factor Management
  • Multi-crew cooperation (MCC)
  • UAS Operator and Management Personnel Responsibilities
  • Remote Pilot training course for SORA-based Operational Authorisations.
